Session fees

Session fees at Paoli Psychological Associates range from $120 to $200. Psychological testing and consulting are priced differently. Please contact us for details.

Payment is due at each session, and we accept most major credit cards. A sliding fee scale is also available; see more ways to save below.

In-network and out-of-network providers

Therapists who join an insurance company’s network agree to accept rates the insurer sets. When you see an in-network provider, your insurer pays the therapist directly under that contract, and your share is usually a copay (a flat dollar amount) or coinsurance (a percentage of the fee).

A therapist who has no contract with your insurer is considered out-of-network (OON) and sets their own fees. Our clinicians are out-of-network providers. Depending on your plan, OON benefits may still reimburse you for part of what you pay, although some plans require you to meet a separate OON deductible first.

In-network
  • Insurer sets the rate
  • Insurer pays the therapist directly
  • You pay a copay or coinsurance
Out-of-network Our practice
  • Therapist sets the fee
  • You pay at the session
  • Your plan may reimburse part of it

How out-of-network reimbursement works

Many plans cover part of the cost of seeing an out-of-network therapist. Rather than your insurer paying us, you pay the full fee at the time of your session and then send documentation to your insurance company.

50–80% of the session fee reimbursed by most plans once the OON deductible is met
20–50% what you typically end up paying, depending on your plan

A sample calculation

Suppose your plan reimburses 60% of out-of-network therapy costs and has a $1,000 OON deductible. Here’s how a $180 session works out:

  • $180 session
  • $1,000 OON deductible
  • 60% reimbursement
Scenario You pay at session Reimbursed Your net cost
Before deductible is met $180 $0 $180
After deductible, 60% plan $180 $108 $72
After deductible, 80% planFor comparison $180 $144 $36

Good to know: The OON deductible typically counts all out-of-network care, not only therapy. If other medical expenses have already met your deductible for the year, your sessions may qualify for reimbursement right away.

Actual reimbursement always depends on your plan and your insurer’s policies.

Getting started

Since every plan works differently, it’s worth confirming your benefits up front. Here’s what to do:

  1. Check your coverage Call your insurer before your first appointment and ask:
    • Do I have out-of-network mental health benefits?
    • What is my out-of-network deductible, and has it been met?
    • What percentage of the fee will be reimbursed after the deductible?
    • Do I need a referral or pre-authorization?
  2. Find out how claims are filed Your insurer’s member portal or customer service line can tell you what they require for an OON claim.
  3. Use your monthly statement At the end of each month, we’ll provide a superbill, an itemized statement of your sessions with the details your insurer needs.
  4. File the claim Most insurers accept claims online.
  5. Get reimbursed Your insurer sends payment directly to you.

The specifics vary from plan to plan.
